Coloured Rice Sensory Play – Fish Picture
A while ago I made some coloured rice and have been using it in a variety of sensory play tubs. So far I’ve kept the colours separate so that I can re-use the rice however I fancy, but today I though I’d try something different.
The Robot has been getting into his play dough recently so I thought I would use this and the rice to make a picture in his tuff spot. I picked a fish because the Robot has started to say fish so I figured this would reinforce his learning.
Me being a bit foolish tried to make this when the Robot was around. I’d roll the play dough into sausages, and to be fair he helped a bit, but would then destroy my picture again. My advice is wait till nap time! Which I did on my second attempt.
It’s simple, make your shape first with the play dough then pour your rice into the shape. I don’t have quantities for you, work with what you’ve got and or make the shapes smaller if you have too! Here is my creation.
Let’s see how we got on. As usual when waking the Robot from his nap I told him I’d been busy and that we had some fun downstairs. He saw the tuff spot and went “fish”, my job here was done! He went straight in and picked up the play dough and discarded it a bit unsure if he was about to be told off.
When he realised he’d got away with something he launched straight into the rice, knocking it everywhere.
There goes the fish…
The rice well and truly mixed up after about 20 minutes we started to play with the rice and exploring the senses. I had included his star shape stacker toy on the picture and he used this to play with. We could fill all the stars and tip it back out again.
Let’s have a look at all the senses that we used this time
SIGHT – Did you not see the Fish!? It’s very colourful and appealing.
SOUND – The noise of the rice when you tip it out
TOUCH – The rice is quite tactile
TASTE – Well he always eats the rice a bit!
SMELL – Maybe not this time!
Tidying up is easy. We managed to save most of the rice in a jiffy bag and when he pulled the play dough off we put away for next time. The rice that ended on the carpet we just hoovered up. It’s really simple.
We really do love playing with rice and we’ll do this activity again with different shapes. I’ll have to think of something to do with red and blue rice mix now!
I hope that you enjoyed this and if you fancy giving it or similar a go then please let me know? I love to see pictures of other kids at play, just tag me #messandplay over on Instagram!
Ha that fish was very impressive! Another fab idea but my god Toby would have rice in the far reaches of every crevice of my house! #familyfun

What a great idea! And a very handsome fish indeed. Looks like the Robot got a good bit of fun out of it. #familyfun xx

Wow, that’s fantastic! Emmeline is possibly the messiest child I’ve ever met and the one time I made her a rice activity, I was hoovering the damn stuff up for weeks. Maybe I’ll try again soon but when it gets warmer and outside…#FamilyFun

This looks like good fun. We tried the red rice and I’ve now neglected it for puzzles with my eldest. Naps (especially them napping at the same time) are a rarity here. #FamilyFun

What a good mama you are! You make it sound easy, but I know that there was a good bit of prep work involved here. You did a terrific job with involving all the senses…I bet he had a ball!
