What do Bloggers do when the Internet fails?

Just as I am getting into the swing of being a blogger, enjoying it and having it take over my life in a happy way my first stumbling block hits me!  The Internet is not working!  Our phone line is dead! It’s the most frustrating thing that has happened to me in such a short while.

It would be brilliant if I lived in London town, with internet cafes and wireless internet round every corner. I could probably function on my phone and nobody would be any the wiser.  Well I don’t I live in the glamorous heights of a grey northern town where the number/letter combo of 4G just doesn’t exist!  I think the number/letter combo of 3G is pretty poor too!

So there you have it, I can’t get on the web, what am I going to do all day?

The discovery of the broken internet didn’t worry me initially, I figured it a blip, it’ll be back on in an hour or two.  It’s a nice day, I have a happy baby on my hands, we’d go for a walk.  I dusted off the cobwebs on the really old Jogger buggy that I lovingly repaired while with bump.  This was a great discovery in its self, it was such a joy to push and it coped surprisingly well with the bumpy muddy canal path.  I’ll be using it again.

While on my walk I took the opportunity to sit on a bench and watch the water.  The Robot got a sneaky milk feed in too, so he was happy.  In the middle of fields it turns out that my phone can just about handle a WhatsApp conversation.  Yay contact with the outside world, and a little rant about my internet!

Realising I hadn’t had a proper lunch I had to head home.  I had my fingers crossed the entire way that we’d be back online when I got there.  The Robot fell asleep on route so I left him in the garden while I checked if the little green light was flashing.  Nooooooooo!

It was 3.30, still early, still time.  Still sunny, I made a ham sandwich, made a brew, I sat out in the garden to relax in a surprisingly warm winters day.  Looking at my teeny tiny garden while I ate, I realised that the plant pots and a full trees worth of pine needles were in exactly the same position as when I had the Robot last July.  Time to tackle the garden!

The Robot woke up just as I started but as ever the good baby he is, he sat and watched me for 45 minutes while I swept and weeded the garden. Lovely baby!   All finished and time to head inside.

Check computer, turn router on/off a few times.  Realise I can do some image work for the blog.  The Robot had other ideas and demanded my attention.  We played a little, had a bit more milk and cuddled.  It was time to put tea on, while I fumed about the Internet.  This is when I picked up the actual phone (landline), it was dead to the world, I tried the phone upstairs.  Also dead.

This was serious.  The internet could have been a blip, but a dead phone line, that required some extra work.  Hunt for the telephone number to ring Plusnet (name and shame).  I was amazed that I had filed the piece of paper in a logical place.  Now as call centres go Plusnet was surprisingly okay, they had good tunes. I put them on loud speak and me and the Robot had a little dance.  (How to make the best of a situation!)

The upshot of the phone call was that the main hub had a fault and a BT engineer will fix if by Wednesday midnight. That is a whole 2 days.  2 days and no internet, what am I going to do now?

I rang my Mum, we went to have a sleepover at her house.  She is a really busy lady and was out dancing when we arrived.  I put the Robot to bed and cracked open the lap top to get on with some blogging!  Until Mum got home.  A whole evening of… my Mum talking at me all night!

Next morning at my Mums, I got a little more blogging done! Tuesdays I spend with my mum anyway, she scowled at me all morning.  I agreed to go out for a walk with her.  Just round the block but fresh air none the less.  We had lunch and then went into town so I could go to the dentist.  She monitored a sleeping Robot while I went in.  Low and behold in town my phone likes 3G!  I received emails and got to chat on Whatsapp for a little bit.  I need 2 fillings, maternity treatment is free!

On the way home we stopped at McDonalds for McFlurrys and drove to the sea to eat them:

Back at Mums I wasn’t rude enough to power up the laptop but I did play with Twitter on my phone! I wasn’t frowned on at all!  I loitered at Mums as long as I could, but the inevitable drive home was essential, I had to find out if the internet was back on.

Not a chance! I hadn’t seen Dave in over 24 hours, we had a cuddle.  The Robot was unsettled, it took a few hours to get him to bed. When he eventually went off I took the opportunity to ring a friend.  Something that blogging has distracted me from.  With nothing left to do, an early bed time was in order.  (Such a good idea, felt more awake next day)

Waking up at 6 I really was not expecting the internet back on, they had 18 hours!  We had an early breakfast and decided to go to the shops. Thank you Aldi for opening up at 8am!  The Robot got to use a trolley for the first time, I normally carry him. I felt with a trolley I could waste a lot more time perusing the entire shop!  It did help!

As the Robot woke up earlier than usual, by 10 he was desperate to sleep, I had a cunning plan. If he sleeps in the buggy I could go to the library.  So off we went to the library to use their computers (for the first time).  It’s a sleepy library during the day and the whole experience was quite therapeutic. The Robot slept the entire time we were there and I got to catch up on some things for the blog!  While there I chose a new cook book with my ABC123 challenge in mind.

The Robot woke up when I got home we ate lunch and I watched my router expectantly, no internet yet.  We have a breastfeeding group on a Wednesday afternoon, so off we went, nothing exciting to report.  Still a beautiful day after we went for a walk with a friend from the group.  12000 steps later I get home with a rush to cook tea.  I had forgotten I’d bought an Aldi Free range chicken for tea!  I did look at the lights but they weren’t flashing…

Dave text me to tell me Plusnet had text him to say it could be another 48 hours as they are still trying to fix the fault… Noooooooooo…

I’ll leave my story there, I think this is going to deserve a part two when I get my Internet back…

(We’re currently at my Mums stealing her internet (I apologise for the ranty blog))

  1. I can’t believe that they still haven’t sorted your problem hun. We had a similar situation before Christmas and had no internet for 2 weeks (I hate to tell you this) but fortunately we have brilliant neighbours who let me log into theirs. Worth a try? Good luck and hope it is sorted very soon. TY for linking up with #FamilyFun

  2. Hope you get your internet sorted out soon – it is so frustrating when it goes down. Good that you were able to use your mum’s internet though and it’s amazing how much you can get done around the house and in the garden when the internet goes down. We had very patchy internet when we were on holiday in the Isle of Man last year and I quite liked the enforced blogging break but I can imagine just how frustrating it must be for you.

  3. It’s so frustrating when the internet goes down! It’s happened to me a few times but luckily hasn’t lasted longer than 24 hours. It drives me crazy, though – it’s amazing how dependent I’ve become on it! It was even worse when I used to work from home and would need to camp out in my husband’s office for the day in order to get any work done. #FamilyFun

  4. It is amazing how dependent we become on the Internet especially since I didn’t have it until I was a teenager. I can’t believe how long it has taken then to fix it! I would have left them by now in a huff! I hope you get it back soon. Love the photos by the way #FamilyFun

  9. It is sooo frustrating when this happens! Last time it happened to me I spent the full 6 hours it was down writing posts on Word ready to copy over. It was really frustrating not being able to pop online to check things etc though. I still had my phone but everything takes so much longer on there! #effitfriday

  12. It’s so infuriating being without internet, we are in a serviced apartment and it’s a little bit hit and miss. The whole 4G doesn’t really happen out here and don’t get me started on the rubbish that is my phone…..can’t believe it took them so long that there is a part 2 and 3…(off for the next instalment now)
