Ice Play
It’s probably not the best time of the year to tackle this project. It’s been sleeting outside on and off all week so not the warmest. Plough on regardless! I’ve been making ice all week especially to do this. I went to the freezer this morning and Dave has been using it. I don’t have as much ice as I’d hoped for! Bah!
All you need is ice and a bowl. I coloured some of the ice with squash. The Robot has never experienced ice before so I don’t know how he will react. Let’s see how we get on:
It’s brilliant fun! I totally recommend that if you have a small one, give this ago, it’ll keep them entertained for ages. After the initial shock of the cold the Robot was in to it. Stirring it around, trying to pick it up, bashing it. Let’s face it, he loves bashing. The final prize is when he discovered the pink ones tasted nice… I am going to try this again in the Summer, with more ice and kitchen utensils and cups. I think I’ll even make fruity ice lollys!
Have you ever tried ice play before? What’s your favourite ice lolly? Let me know!
#ABC123 is a challenge I have set myself to complete 26 weeks of posts, every week a different letter of the alphabet. This week is the letter I.
Do you fancy having a go at the #ABC123 Challenge?

This looks like so much fun! Did you use normal ice cube trays? The blocks look quite big? Love the idea of colouring with squash! I am going to do this but will wait until it is warmer!! Thanks for sharing x

I had used 3 little tubs to make 3 big cubes. Dave used most the little ones so I am glad I did make big ones. The little ones are great for one handed picking up and the big ones are great for two handed. His hands were cold for ages and we only gave him 5 minutes of fun, so defo wait till summer!
You are so inventive! This is a fab idea…I’m definitely going to try it in the summer and at the same time practice my pain practice with ice for giving birth…brilliant, a multi tasking activity!

Haha, just brilliant! Practice away!
This was too good a post not to return to for #familyfun. I’ve really been thinking about it…my son doesn’t like touching things much with his hands so this summer will be about challenging that a little bit with lots of your messy ideas x

Going to bring it back in the summer, I might try orange juice!
this looks like so much fun. It must have been a really interesting learning experience for him.
By the look on his face, I think so too!
That’s a brilliant idea, I think this would be great fun even with a toddler and make them all different flavours. I might even sneak some broccoli in there and see if she’ll eat it 😉 #familyfun
Ooo broccoli! Its meant to be good for motor skills too!
Ooh bless- his wee face! You are a much nicer mummy than me, I don’t think I would have ever trusted mine with food on that lovely carpet #FamilyFun

Lovely? It’s so old! It’s an excuse to try and get a new one when the kid gets older!!
This is a really great idea! I never tried it before. It looks even more fun with the ice coloured! #FamilyFun

Oh he liked the coloured one, he got to eat it! When I only give him water in a cup, of course he’ll pick squash!!
What a gorgeous idea?! Love the pictures and Robot’s faces in them – brilliant! Glad Dave has been enjoying the ice too! #Familyfun

What a great idea! I’m always looking for new ideas for how to entertain the Popple indoors. She loves getting into things an exploring, so this sounds like something worth trying. #FamilyFun

We do ice play with the dog – she gets so excited if we get ice out for anything, and she chases it all around the floor (NB It only works on hard floors!)
Ha ha, glad we can adapt for family pets too!
Love this idea and I think even I could manage this! He’s just adorable, love his little face with the pink ice! #FamilyFun
Go for it, just don’t use the ice in the gin first!
That sounds like a lot of fun and the Robot looks like he is really enjoying it. Love the final photo when he discovered that the pink ice tasted nice. Thanks for co-hosting #FamilyFun this week 🙂

This is such a great sensory treat! Why don’t you try hiding toys inside – kids love that. Like little dinosaurs or plastic animals. You can also use shaped moulds. Thanks for co-hosting #FamilyFun with me this week hun

Oh great idea! I did see Lego figures while researching. Definitely one for the summer
bless him what fun! I’m a huge fan of sensory play. back in my days as a baby room leader we used to fill tough trays with jelly – always a hit. thanks for sharing #familyfun xx

Oh yes Jelly! Come back tomorrow! *wink*
Aw how cute is The Robot! Awesome. We never tried ice play as such but certainly had laughs when the Hubby handed BP an ice cube when he was a baby. His face was a picture!
#FamilyFun
The difference in temperature was a shock but when he got going it was great! It took a while to warm his hands up though!
How funny that we both had fun with our littles and ice this week! Looks like he was really fascinated by the ice and the flavour too- fab idea to add squash! #familyfun x
Ha, yes I spotted your post in the Linky, I’ll make it tomorrow!
Such a great idea! I never think about doing things like this, but my little one would love it so I think we may give this a go once I’m on maternity leave in a few weeks time. It would have been nice to try it when she was a bit younger as a sensory activity like you have, but nethertheless, I am sure it will be fun! Plus, I can always give it a go with baby number two in a few months time too 🙂 Emily #FamilyFun
Yes great idea! With the warmer weather it’ll help cool her down too. Plus extra fluid if sucking the ice, she just won’t notice!
This is such a wonderful idea… and brave to try on the carpet. I keep meaning to do something like this with Little Button. She’s always finger-diving into the ice tray every time the freezer is opened. #FamilyFun

It’s an old and shoddy carpet so I don’t mind!
We haven’t done ice play before but it does look fun. Everything goes in Tin Box Baby’s mouth at the moment so I think she’d love flavoured ice 🙂 #familyfun
Haha, it’ll be great for hydration in the summer!
That looks fun and cooling for teeth and weather X #familyfun

Ha ha, his 2 almost 5 little teeth 🙂
This looks like a great idea! I bet my little one would love it too, but I’ve never thought to try it. It’s great fun trying out different textures for them to discover. Just this weekend, we went to the beach and sat her on the stones & it was so sweet watching her experience it for the first time. Thanks for hosting #familyfun xxx
It’s all new and exciting for them isn’t it. We did grass for the first time a month or so ago. It hadn’t occured to me that it was new for him until he started pulling at it!
Great idea! I love your ABC challenge too. My boys are older now, so we’ve tried freezing toys in large blocks of ice, then doing different things to release them. Hours of fun! #FamilyFun
It’s good to see it works for older children too! Thank the lovely comment 🙂
Looks like Robot really enjoyed the ice play after all. #familyfun

That looks fun! Never tried this, but have always found it is entertaining to give the girls really cold things to touch and eat. They are currently obsessed with wanting to touch the bread when it comes out of the freezer before it gets toasted! #familyfun
